What is Astrology and What is a Sun Sign?

How many times have you read your horoscope and wondered, “How can somebody know me just by knowing my Sun sign?”  The fact is, an astrologer does know something about you just by knowing your Sun sign.  But, a Sun sign’s characteristics don’t tell the whole story about a person -- only part of the story.  That’s why when you read a horoscope based only on the Sun sign, sometimes the information will be correct and other times it won’t even come close.

When astrologers provide complete consultations for their clients, they look at much more than the Sun sign.  The date, time, and city of birth are used to calculate an astrology birth chart, which contains all of the planets in addition to the Sun and Moon.  Astrologers examine the location of the planets and the signs they occupy; they observe the planets angular relationships to each other and their relationship to the earth.  It’s complicated and takes years to learn.

Even though your Sun sign doesn’t tell everything about you, it does describe an important and central theme of your life.  The Sun is our solar system’s star and your Sun sign is your own personal guiding star.

Although astrology has been around a long time (historians trace it back to at least 2500 B.C.), it has been adapted over the years to meet the changing needs of humanity.  It has survived the rise and fall of civilizations, from times when astrology’s benefits were available to everyone, to periods when it was reserved for royalty and the wealthy.  In modern times it is used by people from all walks of life, including presidents (Ronald Reagan), business people (J.P. Morgan), and those you personally know.

Astrology addresses every part of your life from your deepest dreams and desires to your spirituality, from your friendships to your love life. Knowing information about your Sun sign helps you take advantage of opportunities and answer some of your questions such as:

Why do some things come easily to me while I struggle in other areas?
I am attracted to someone -- but is he or she a good match for me?
How do I know what career will be the right one?
How can I make friends more easily?
How can I feel more confident?
How can I better understand the important people in my life?

More About Sun Signs

When people ask, “What’s your sign?” they are asking what zodiac sign the Sun was in on the day you were born.  Although the earth revolves around the Sun, from here it appears that the Sun circles the earth.  As the Sun makes this apparent journey around the earth, it travels across the backdrop of the twelve signs of the zodiac.  The term zodiac comes from the Greek zodiacos, which means a “circle of animals.”  Most of the zodiac signs have animal symbols.
The Sun enters Aries, the first zodiac sign, on March 21 of each year, which signals the first day of spring.  It travels through Aries for approximately 30 days until it enters the next sign, Taurus, on April 20.  Anyone born between March 21 and April 20 has an Aries Sun sign.  Just as someone who is born when the Sun travels though Taurus between April 20 and May 21 has the Sun sign Taurus.  When we celebrate our birthdays we are commemorating the day the Sun arrives at the same part of the zodiac it occupied on the day of birth.
The table below provides dates for each Sun sign.  If your birthday is on the day the Sun changes signs, which is called being born on the cusp, you will need to find out the time of your birth to identify your Sun sign.  Go to
vitalrec.com  to find out how.
Just as the Sun is at the center of our solar system, in astrology the Sun represents your “center.”  It describes how you express yourself and how you think about yourself.  Every Sun sign has its own unique and distinctive characteristics.  One sign is not better or worse than another, but each has both positive and negative qualities.  Expressing the positive qualities of your sign makes you feel confident.  Acting out the negative traits of your sign makes you feel worse about yourself.  Astrology gives specific information tailored to your Sun sign that tells you which traits to emphasize and minimize to create a successful life.
Chances are you will identify with some of the descriptions that are not from your own Sun sign.  No one has only their Sun sign’s characteristics.  When you were born, the Moon occupied a zodiac sign that is different than your Sun sign.  (Only people born at the new Moon have the same Moon sign and Sun sign.)  Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto were also in their own sign.  The planets and Moon represent different parts of your personality.  In astrology, the combination of the planets, Sun, and Moon sign placements illustrate the full complexity of a person.
For example, your Sun may be in the independent, free-spirited sign of Aquarius, while your Moon occupies the cautious and security-focused sign Taurus.  Reading about the differences between these two signs can help you understand how you have different needs that must be fulfilled.  In this example, to make life easier you would need to balance your desire for independence with your need for security and stability.
In addition to the Sun, Moon, and planets, you also have a rising sign, which is determined by the time of your birth.  The rising sign (also called the ascendant) describes how you approach life and the type of first impression you give people.
Your astrological birth chart is a picture of the sky at the time of your birth as viewed from Earth.  In it are the Sun, Moon, planets, and rising sign.  If you have a copy of your birth chart and know your rising sign, Moon sign, and the signs of the planets, reading about those signs will give you information that you will be able to use right away.  If you don’t have a copy of your birth chart, go to the
